CAN GREYHOUNDS LIVE WITH CATS ?

We often get calls from people looking to adopt a greyhound that also have cats. Strange you may think but certain greyhounds can happily live with cats. So the question is how do we at Homes4hounds assess which greyhounds could potentially live with a cat ?

We do not routinely test every greyhound with cats we would only test if the nature and characteristics gives positive vibes that there is potential there.

From unraced greyhounds to pups that didn’t chase or greyhounds that proved on the track they were too playful for racing are the main candidates to be potentially tested.

Now here is a common mistake many people make, we will never ever say that a greyhound is cat safe, they may be cat trainable and there is a difference. When we do our introduction to a cat every precaution is taken and this is done safely. The dog is muzzled and a basic introduction to the home would take place first prior to the dog being introduced to any cat. Believe it or not greyhounds are no different to other breeds, they can all chase cats the only difference is a greyhound is fast enough to catch a cat where many breeds don’t have that speed. Recently we have homed 5 greyhounds to families with cats so it can be a case of enquiring at the correct time. In some instances it may take months for a potential suitable companion to become available. Also if you are looking for a cat trainable greyhound your requirements can’t be too specific to sex, colour or age as we genuinely don’t know who is arriving with us that could be trainable.
